What's New?

Don't forget about funding for the Gifted from the Minnesota Department of Education. Gifted and talented revenue is $12 times a district’s adjusted marginal cost pupil units (AMCPU).This is still in effect for 2010-2011. See Minnesota Department of Education: Gifted and Talented for more information.

MEGT is going "Green." Our newsletters will be sent as a pdf digitally as an email attachment. The newsletter will still be formatted in the same way so you can print it out if you want, but our goal is to "save a tree" and to get the news out to you in a timely manner. Be sure your email is up to date. Send any changes to Pam Pearson.

Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award

  Nicholas Green, 1987-1994

The Nicholas Green Scholarship Fund, is awarded to one student in each state, along with a Certificate of Excellence by the NAGC. Students selected for the award are between grades 3 and 6 and have distinguished themselves in academic achievement, leadership, or the visual or performing arts.

The award program was established through funds provided by Maggie and Reg Green to honor the memory of their seven-year-old son, Nicholas, who was killed in a drive-by shooting while vacationing in Italy in 1994. The Greens felt it was important to recognize the gifts and talents in children who are now at the age that Nicholas was when he died. NAGC is honored to be part of the Greens' generous spirit. That the award exists is a tribute to the determination of the Greens to take a terrible tragedy and turn it into a positive force of recognition.

Nominations for the Minnesota NGDS Award for 2009 are now closed. Nominations for 2010 must be received by August 1, 2010.

MEGT ANNOUNCING ITS 2009
Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award Winner

Sid Ramesh has been named the Minnesota winner of the National Association for Gifted Children 2009 Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award. NAGC sponsors this award, which is designated to recognize excellence in young children. The award program was established by Maggie and Reg Green to honor the memory of their 7-year-old son, Nicholas, who was killed in a drive-by shooting while visiting in Italy in 1994. The Greens believe it is important to recognize gifts and talents in children who are now at the age that Nicholas was when he died.

It is with great pleasure that we honor Sid Ramesh. He is the son of Kavitha and Ramesh Shanmugavel. Sid was attending the Atheneum gifted magnet school in Inver Grove Heights at the time of his nomination as a fifth grader. He has now graduated from Atheneum and is currently attending the Math and Science Academy in Woodbury.  Sid has demonstrated exemplary work in his academics, exhibited high development in his musical talents, and has displayed strong leadership skills at his school.  He is already an accomplished musician on the keyboard and is finding success in writing original compositions.  In addition to his musical talent, Sid is gifted in academia.  The following list highlights some of Sid’s accomplishments in the past few years:

*Qualified to participate in the University of Minnesota Talented Youth Program.

*Scored at the 94th percentile in the 2009 Explore Test administered by Northwestern University’s Midwest Academic Talent Search for which he was recognized at the UMATS ceremony.

*Member of the first place MN Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl team at the fifth grade level during the fall of 2008.

*Earned high honors for the difficult gold level of the Word Masters competition with a perfect score on meets 1 and 2 and a score of 19 out of 20 on the final meet.

*Captured second place in the state in the National PTA Reflections Program for an original score in musical composition during the 2007-2008 school year.

*Participant on his school’s Student Service Team. (Student Council)

*Competed in the Math Masters of MN tournament securing the highest of honors with a

first place in all three areas of competition: facts, drill, individual problem solving, and team ranking.

Sid clearly represents the type of ambassador and humanitarian that we hope and wish for in all our gifted students.
The Minnesota Educators of Gifted and Talented are very pleased to name him as Minnesota’s award winner.
Sid will receive a $500 U.S. Savings Bond and a certificate from NAGC.
State winners across the country were selected for having distinguished themselves in academics, leadership, athletics, or the arts. The Minnesota Educators of the Gifted and Talented, an affiliate of NAGC, hosts the Nicholas Green Scholarship nomination and award process here in Minnesota. MEGT congratulates Sid on his outstanding achievements.

Friend of the Gifted Award Procedures

On February 6, 1996, the Minnesota Educators of the Gifted and Talented State Board adopted guidelines for honoring people with the "Friend of the Gifted Award." Each year the Board determines if the award will be presented or if more than one person will receive an award that year. The three criteria for nominations are: long-term support of the gifted, broad-ranging impact, currently resides in Minnesota. There is a call for nominations at the annual meeting held in February and a follow-up request is placed in the spring issue of the newsletter. At the fall board meeting board members nominate possible recipients based on input from the membership at large and they may also make additional nominations. Following discussion of the candidates board members vote on the nominee(s) to be honored that year. The president sends the award recipient(s) a letter of congratulations and an invitation to attend the February annual membership meeting. This letter also includes a request for background information to be included in the conference booklet and a written response to the award nomination if the recipient is unable to attend the meeting. The selected recipient(s) are announced at the annual meeting in February where they are presented with a red marble apple, a lighthouse lapel pin, a certificate, and lifetime membership in the state organization. The recipient(s) have an opportunity to address the audience at that time.
